A Viral Campaign That Got Couples A Room

Client — OYO Rooms

Role — Copywriter

Context & Problem

Unmarried couples across India couldn't find hotel rooms reliably. Local ID check-ins were denied. The experience was uncertain, even hostile sometimes. Demand existed. But the behaviour was suppressed.

Role

The job was to make people comfortable with an idea that was suppressed for decades.

Strategy

Shift the idea from hidden to widely accepted. Three moves: 1. Remove ambiguity. 2. Signal safety. 3. Normalise behaviour.

The Product

Couple Friendly OYOs. A toggle on the app. Users could filter for hotels that accepted local ID check-ins for unmarried couples.

The Writing

The response had to feel like it came from a friend. Not a warning. Not a lecture. More like a wink. After hundreds of options, one line landed. I said it casually in a creative meeting, discussing problems for unmarried couples: "Now when someone says get a room, you can actually get a room!" Get A Room. That became the campaign. After the tagline landed, the headlines were so much fun to write.

The Ads

Simple, humour-packed. Each ad came from real-life experience and observation.

Execution

Digital ads, push notifications, social media, in-app messaging, SMS, blogs, and email. Consistent messaging across every touchpoint reinforced the idea.
